Sunday of Support for Puerto Rico

February 9

Once again our sisters and brothers in the Diocese of Puerto Rico, have been traumatized and knocked down by a natural disaster. Continuous earthquakes beginning December 28, 2019 have destroyed buildings and made thousands homeless, especially in the southern regions. When I saw this statue of our Lord at Mision la Santa Cruz in the Episcopal Diocese of Puerto Rico, the words of Teresa of Avila came to mind: “Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks with compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.” Look closely. The hands on the statue are missing. It is my hope the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland will become the hands of Christ for our sisters and brothers in Puerto Rico.

Here in the Diocese of Maryland, we have been keeping Puerto Rico, the Diocese of Puerto Rico and Bishop Morales in our prayers. When I make my annual visit to our companion diocese, hopefully this spring, I would like to take a gift from us with me. These funds will go directly to disaster relief.

I am asking for your help in supporting the Diocese of Puerto Rico by taking up a collection in your congregation. We have designated February 9 as the Sunday of Support for Puerto Rico. These funds will go directly to the Episcopal Diocese of Puerto Rico, to support their hospital, social services ministry, their orphanage, and those areas of critical need from the earthquakes. Many of the institutions in Puerto Rico are run by the Episcopal Diocese.

Congregations should send a check payable to the Diocese of Maryland to the diocesan offices by March 1. This way I can personally take one check to Bishop Morales. Individuals may also donate.

Give to the Diocese of Puerto Rico our #DioceseofHope.

Thank you so much for your faithful support of your sisters and brothers in the Diocese of Puerto Rico. We are a #Community of Love and Puerto Rico is a #DioceseofHope.

Blessings and peace,
