2020 Stewardship Conference Workshop Descriptions 

Estate Planning for the LGBTQ community
Lee Carpenter, Estate Planning Attorney, Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr LLP 

This session will focus on creating a welcoming environment for members of the LGBTQ community. Learn how to speak with LGBTQ individuals without causing offense, understand how their life experiences and philanthropic goals may differ, and identify ways to avoid unintentional bias. Strategies for reaching out to this underserved community are also discussed in a stewardship-development context. Participants will leave the session prepared to work with same-sex couples and other LGBTQ individuals with new understanding and confidence. 

 Grants-on-the-Go: Quick Pointers on Congregational Grant Writing
Rock Schuler, Vicar, St. Andrew the Fisherman, Mayo 

This session provides a quick overview of grant writing at a parish level. Participants will learn what grant opportunities are available for mission work and religious organizations, where to cultivate grant opportunities at the local level and beyond, and will leave the session with a greater confidence in their ability to convey their mission’s purpose and needs in a grant application. 

 Stewardship: Our Gifts and Our Sharing
Kathy Grayson, Director of Development, Episcopal Diocese of Maryland 

This session offers a quick refresher course on the fundamentals of planning a stewardship campaign, from choosing a theme, recruiting leadership, establishing vision, mission and donor-parishioner cultivation. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how to plan a stewardship campaign from beginning to end. 

 Techevangelism: Expanding Your Engagement in the Digital Age

In this session, our panelists will examine stewardship through the lens of the congregational development model. Learn how to use social media and other digital tools in tandem with congregational development in order to reach the community both inside and outside their church walls to engage them in mission and in stewardship.
