Bishops to present Welcoming the Stranger:
A Pastoral letter addressing the need for comprehensive immigration reform

The bishops of Maryland invite you to a press conference and presentation of Welcoming the Stranger, a pastoral letter on immigration to the people of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland.

Thursday, September 2
Cathedral of the Incarnation

10:00 a.m.
Worship, stories of immigrants and refugees, dialog and conversation

1:00 p.m.
Press Conference

On the agenda to speak at the press conference are:
  • The Rt. Rev. Eugene Taylor Sutton, bishop diocesan
  • The Rt. Rev. John L. Rabb, bishop suffragan
  • The Rev. Héctor R. Rodríguez, Latino missioner for the Diocese of Maryland
  • Mr. Peter Kirchgraber, executive director, ERICA (Episcopal Refugee and Immigrant Center Alliance)

This pastoral letter can be used to remind all of us of the biblical values and imperatives that should guide our treatment of newcomers and sojourners.

In a world on the move, we need to learn to welcome the stranger, to embrace the "other." The moral principles of the Episcopal faith lead us to value every individual, to value family ties and seek to preserve families, and to cry out for justice for all people.

Episcopal Village East comes to the Cathedral September 24-25

Are young adults really interested in church?

This is a regional event.  More than 40 seminarians from across the country will be here.  The organizer is the Rev. Karen Ward, vicar and abbess, Church of the Apostles, Seattle.  Her congregation has more than 150 members and the average age is 26.

Personal stories will be woven through the concert, told by new Americans from Liberia, Bhutan, and the Congo.  The concert will be followed by a candlelight reception, with internationally inspired hors d'oeuvres.

The Episcopal Refugee and Immigrant Center Alliance is a faith-based community resource center offering assistance to refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants in the greater Baltimore area. ERICA was founded by former refugees who have experienced firsthand the challenges faced by those new to American society. The center offers many services to refugees, including interest-free loans to cover legal aid and family reunification, monthly workshops, crisis support and transitional aid during housing and utility emergencies, personal assistance from volunteer mentors, winter clothing drives, local community referrals and documentation assistance.

Volunteers Needed

Traveling Resources
The diocesan Resource Center has an immediate need for volunteers to catalogue and place bar codes on books and DVDs. We have about 4,000 resources that have not been catalogued and coded. We would like to catalogue and code all of them as we reshelve books after our recent renovations.  Volunteers may donate one hour or several hours, but between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday now through Oct. 1. Training, which will take about 10 minutes, will be provided.  Required skills and gifts are  good reading skills, ability to enter information accurately on a computer, and ability to work unsupervised and by themselves. Volunteers may apply by emailing Randi Hicks Rowe at rhicksrowe@episcopalmaryland.org or by phone, 410-467-1399, ext 371.

Spiritual Support Training offered at GBMC
Greater Baltimore Medical Center offers an experiential program through their newly created Center for Spiritual Support Training. This is a 10-week course that meets on Thursdays from 3-7pm, although accommodations can be made if the 3-5pm time frame conflicts with work commitments. The curriculum combines group interaction along with patient visitation.  The dates of the 3 different sessions are: Fall Unit: September 16 - November 18, 2010; Winter Unit: January 6-March 10th, 2011: Spring Unit: March 24-June 2, 2011.  The focus for the participants is to develop practical skills and tools to be an effective pastoral presence with another human being as well as to understand the dynamics between health and illness within a person's environment. The program is designed for both lay or ordained individuals, who are interested in furthering a personal interest in pastoral ministry and/or who desire to take on a leadership role for spiritual care within their own community and therefore to be a valuable resource for training others.  For further information and an application, please contact The Rev. Caroline Stewart, Program Coordinator, at cstewart@gbmc.org or 443-849-2055.

Around the globe, church bells will be ringing, trumpets sounding and people will be banging spoons on metal pots and pans to let officials know of their commitment to end extreme poverty. This is our opportunity to show our solidarity in support of the MDGs by ringing church bells at noon on September 18. The message will be loud and clear to the leaders of the summit of our resolve.
